My ... moreI am a historian of early modern Europe, and I earned my Ph.D. in 2010 at the Free University of Berlin, Germany. My first book ("Flugpublizistik und Öffentlichkeit um 1700. Dynamiken, Akteure und Strukturen im urbanen Raum des Alten Reiches", Stuttgart 2011) is dealing with various aspects of the early modern pamphlet culture in German cities, and my second book, which I co-authored with Bernd-Christian Otto, is on early modern manuscripts of learned magic ("Magical Manuscripts in Early Modern Europe: The Clandestine Trade In Illegal Book Collections", Basingstoke 2017). Currently, I am working on a monograph on book-trade networks of eighteenth-century Amsterdam, London and Hamburg.

The appendices include a critical edition of the Leipzig 'catalogus rariorum manuscriptorum' from 1710 (which includes content analyses of all available manuscripts) and four images of the original catalogue.

This book presents the story of a unique collection of 140 manuscripts of ‘learned magic’ that was sold for a fantastic sum within the clandestine channels of the German book trade in the early eighteenth century. The book will interpret this collection from two angles – as an artefact of the early modern book market as well as the longue-durée tradition of Western learned magic –, thus taking a new stance towards scribal texts that are often regarded as eccentric, peripheral, or marginal. The study is structured by the apparent exceptionality, scarcity, and illegality of the collection, and provides chapters on clandestine activities in European book markets, questions of censorship regimes and efficiency, the use manuscripts in an age of print, and the history of learned magic in early modern Europe. As the collection has survived till this day in Leipzig University Library, the book provides a critical edition of the 1710 selling catalogue, which includes a brief content analysis of all extant manuscripts. The study will be of interest to scholars and students from a variety of fields, such as early modern book history, the history of magic, cultural history, the sociology of religion, or the study of Western esotericism.

"Frühneuzeitliche urbane Öffentlichkeit war geprägt von "fliegenden Blättern" in allen Variationen – Flugpublizistik im weitesten Sinne. Mehrblättrige Flugschriften, obrigkeitliche Einblattdrucke, illustrierte Flugblätter, selbst handgeschriebene "Zettelchen" flogen wortwörtlich durch die Straßen der Städte und prägten so das Meinungs- und Politikklima. Mit den teils fingierten, anonymen und pseudonymen Publikationen wurde Öffentlichkeit von einer Vielzahl von Akteuren opportun organisiert, wenn nötig inszeniert, teilweise kämpferisch behauptet oder auch korrigiert. Als papiernen Gegenwartsbeschleunigern kam Flugpublizistik in urbanen Räumen um 1700 eine Verstärkerfunktion zu: als mediale Impulse dynamisierten Flugdrucke die innerstädtische Politiksphäre, da sie räsonnementanregend auf illiterati und literati wirkten. Auf Basis eines Quellenkorpus von rund 600 Flugdrucken, das im Medienverbund samt seinen Akteuren kontextualisiert wird, leistet Daniel Bellingradt einen Beitrag zur Historisierung des Öffentlichkeitsbegriffes der Frühen Neuzeit. Städtische Öffentlichkeit um 1700 skizziert er als ein mit Stadtmauern umgebenes mediales Räsonierforum, auf das Flugpublizistik aktivierend einwirkte.

When the printed newspaper came into being in the early modern age, a normative frame or regulative principles for its existence were still missing. These had yet to be developed. The article describes - based on four sources - how this happened. Many of the titles of the forerunners of the periodical newspaper already indicate that they wished to give true, credible and well-grounded information. Legal norms became codified by the press legislation. First professional rules for journalism can be discovered in the early theoretical and critical literature dealing with newspapers. Personal testimonies and programmatic writings back the evidence that normative ideas moved to equity and justice at the end of the 18th century.

The 'Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger' is the "prototype of a popular press" in Germany. A case study of Hugo von Kupffer, over four decades the chief-editor of the paper, sheds light on the innovative journalistic practices established at the 'Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger'. The theoretical concept of sociality supports critical interpretation of historical sources while textual analysis is methodologically complemented by genre theory to describe von Kupffers contributions with regard to journalistic voice and functional modality. The study illustrates that the emergence of a popular press in Germany fosters a new journalistic type following the American example. This journalistic type exhibits characteristics of a professional identity and develops new discursive strategies to engage readerships.
Erik Koenen: Erich Everth als Leitartikler der 'Vossischen Zeitung' (1921–1923). Journalismus als Krisen- und Zeitdiagnostik der frühen Weimarer Republik

Before Erich Everth in 1926 followed the call on the Germany's first chair for newspaper science in Leipzig, he worked almost fifteen years as journalist. A highlight of his journalistic career marked Everth's occupation as "cultural-political editorialist" of the 'Vossische Zeitung'. Between September 1921 and May 1923 he wrote a little more than 50 articles for this well-respected liberal newspaper. The focus of his articles were the analysis and diagnosis of the crisis culture of the early Weimar Republic. Against the background of the profound structural crisis of post-war Germany in the early 1920s, Everth drew a still impressive, sharply observed, multifaceted portrait of the strained relationship of the contemporaries to the young Weimar Republic.

Compared to other countries dealing with PR-history set in quite late in Germany. However, meanwhile this field of research became an important part of communication history. By dealing with a specific project during the Weimar Republic this article demonstrates the quality of public communication during that time. It examines the strategy, implementation and aftermath of the "Reichsgesundheitswoche" (RGW) 1926. By doing so it portrays the RGW as an early version of systematic Public Relation. Thus the article enriches the empirical material of the German PR-history covering the first half of the 20th century with a quite unknown example.

At the beginning of the 1990's the topic of prosecution of Jews, which had hitherto been dominated by university chairs in politics and contemporary history, reaches the cultural sectors. Museums and libraries discover that their collections hold looted Jewish property. The same applies to the State and University Library of Bremen. This library is one of the first, who is made to look for looted books on their shelves. The media monitor, comment, praise and criticize this search. The article describes the orders of discourse underlying the media coverage.

The originals (which today lay scattered all over Europe) have been gathered in reproductions by the Institute for German Press Research of Bremen University and can be researched in the State and University Library Bremen. The whole stock of German language 17th century newspapers has been digitized in a project "digitization of historic newspapers", funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). This article aims to describe the digitization of 17th century newspapers (about 375.000 pages) by the State and University Library Bremen.

In der Kommunikationswissenschaft ist das Interesse an der Kommunikationsgeschichte in den letzten anderthalb Jahrzehnten wieder gewachsen. Dazu mögen die Geschichtswissenschaft, die Kulturwissenschaften und andere Disziplinen, die dezidiert an den Zusammenhängen zwischen der Entstehung der Moderne und der Entwicklung von Öffentlichkeit interessiert sind, beigetragen haben.
Einen nicht gering zu veranschlagenden Anteil daran hat auch das Jahrbuch für Kommunikationsgeschichte, das seit 1999 erscheint. Es bietet ein interdisziplinäres Forum, das kommunikationshistorische Forschungsergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit in der Kommunikationswissenschaft und über deren Fachgrenzen hinweg vorstellt.
Der konzeptionelle Aufbau des Jahrbuchs folgt einem vierteiligen Gliederungsprinzip. Der erste Teil ist Aufsätzen vorbehalten. Bevorzugt werden dabei quellennahe, kommunikationshistorische Forschungen, die in ihren Fragestellungen sowohl an den Problemen der Vergangenheit als auch an den Interessen der Gegenwart orientiert sind. Die Miszellen, der zweite Teil, bieten aktuelle Forschungsberichte über die Erschließung, Einordnung und Bewertung wichtiger kommunikationshistorischer Quellenbestände. Eine möglichst breite Information über kommunikationshistorische Publikationen liefert das Jahrbuch in seinem dritten und vierten Teil: Der ausführliche Rezensionsteil enthält kurze prägnante Besprechungen wichtiger Monographien, Sammlungen und Editionen. Die von Wilbert Ubbens (Bremen) bearbeitete Bibliographie der Aufsatzliteratur wertet mehr als 800 internationale Zeitschriften und Jahrbücher aus zahlreichen relevanten Disziplinen aus und konkretisiert nahezu alle Nachweise durch kurze inhaltliche Annotationen. Ein Register erschließt die wichtigen Sachen und Personen, die im Textteil der Aufsätze und Miszellen Erwähnung finden.
Within the communication studies community, interest in the history of communications has grown again over the last one and a half decades. History, cultural studies and other disciplines dedicated to studying the connections between the birth of modern society and the development of the public sphere may have contributed to this trend.
Since its establishment in 1999, the Jahrbuch für Kommunikationsgeschichte ("Yearbook for the History of Communications") has played a substantial role as well. It provides an interdisciplinary forum for the presentation of research on the history of communications to a broad audience not only in the field of communication studies but in other disciplines as well.
By design, the yearbook has four major sections. The first, Essays, gives priority to research on the history of communications concentrating on primary sources and focusing both on problems of the past and the interests of the present. Miscellania, the second section, prints current research reports on the publication, classification and evaluation of important primary sources in communications history. The yearbook provides the broadest possible overview of publications in communications history in its third and fourth sections. The comprehensive Reviews section contains brief, incisive discussions of important monographs, compilations and editions. Bibliography, edited by Wilbert Ubbens (Bremen), analyzes more than 800 international journals and yearbooks in numerous relevant disciplines and catalogs the literature with short annotations on content. An index to subjects and persons provides cross-references to the corresponding passages in the sections Essays and Miscellania.

Es bietet ein interdisziplinäres Forum, das kommunikationshistorische Forschungsergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit in der Kommunikationswissenschaft und über deren Fachgrenzen hinweg vorstellt.
Der konzeptionelle Aufbau des Jahrbuchs folgt einem vierteiligen Gliederungsprinzip. Der erste Teil ist Aufsätzen vorbehalten. Bevorzugt werden dabei quellennahe, kommunikationshistorische Forschungen, die in ihren Fragestellungen sowohl an den Problemen der Vergangenheit als auch an den Interessen der Gegenwart orientiert sind. Die Miszellen, der zweite Teil, bieten aktuelle Forschungsberichte über die Erschließung, Einordnung und Bewertung wichtiger kommunikationshistorischer Quellenbestände. Eine möglichst breite Information über kommunikationshistorische Publikationen liefert das Jahrbuch in seinem dritten und vierten Teil: Der ausführliche Rezensionsteil enthält kurze prägnante Besprechungen wichtiger Monographien, Sammlungen und Editionen. Die von Wilbert Ubbens (Bremen) bearbeitete Bibliographie der Aufsatzliteratur wertet mehr als 800 internationale Zeitschriften und Jahrbücher aus zahlreichen relevanten Disziplinen aus und konkretisiert nahezu alle Nachweise durch kurze inhaltliche Annotationen. Ein Register erschließt die wichtigen Sachen und Personen, die im Textteil der Aufsätze und Miszellen Erwähnung finden.
Within the communication studies community, interest in the history of communications has grown again over the last one and a half decades. History, cultural studies and other disciplines dedicated to studying the connections between the birth of modern society and the development of the public sphere may have contributed to this trend.
Since its establishment in 1999, the Jahrbuch für Kommunikationsgeschichte ("Yearbook for the History of Communications") has played a substantial role as well. It provides an interdisciplinary forum for the presentation of research on the history of communications to a broad audience not only in the field of communication studies but in other disciplines as well.
By design, the yearbook has four major sections. The first, Essays, gives priority to research on the history of communications concentrating on primary sources and focusing both on problems of the past and the interests of the present. Miscellania, the second section, prints current research reports on the publication, classification and evaluation of important primary sources in communications history. The yearbook provides the broadest possible overview of publications in communications history in its third and fourth sections. The comprehensive Reviews section contains brief, incisive discussions of important monographs, compilations and editions. Bibliography, edited by Wilbert Ubbens (Bremen), analyzes more than 800 international journals and yearbooks in numerous relevant disciplines and catalogs the literature with short annotations on content. An index to subjects and persons provides cross-references to the corresponding passages in the sections Essays and Miscellania.

Die internationale Tagung widmet sich der Frage, was ein gebrauchtes Buch ausmacht und wie es gehandelt wird. Um einen Beitrag zu einer noch ausstehenden theoretischen Fundierung der Handels- und Nutzungsmöglichkeiten von ‚gebrauchten’ Büchern zu leisten, sollen vor allem Formen des Handels mit ‚gebrauchten’ Schrift- und Bildmedien der Neuzeit in einer langen historischen Perspektive, von der Frühen Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart, Erörterung finden. Während z.B. die Geschichte des deutschen Antiquariatsbuchhandel in der Moderne in den letzten Jahren von der Forschung recht gut beschrieben worden ist, sind die anderen Formen des Gebrauchtbuchhandels bisher nur in Ansätzen ins Blickfeld der Forschung gerückt. Das Spektrum der Konferenz-Beiträge reicht von der Frühen Neuzeit bis in die unmittelbare Gegenwart. So werden auch Geschäftsmodelle im heutigen Online-Handel berücksichtigt, denn aktuell ist ein veränderter Umgang mit dem Kulturgut Buch in der Gesellschaft zu beobachten, der entgegen der traditionellen Aufbewahrungspraxis zum privaten Weiterverkauf von Büchern animiert.

We are happy to announce that the conference “A History of Early Modern Communication: German and Italian Historiographical Perspectives” will take place in Trent, Italy from December 6th-7th, 2018, at the Istituto storico italo-germanico at Trent. This conference aims to approach and discuss possible answers to the broad question “What is the history of communication?”, focusing on Early Modern Europe (1400-1800). While being a forum for discussing recent and ongoing research on this topic, the conference highlights especially approaches and trends within German and Italian historiography. The event is funded and organized by the Institute for the Study of the Book at Erlangen-Nuremberg University and the Istituto storico italo-germanico at Trent.

It is a truism that the early modern book world run on paper. However, the European paper trade is one of the most unknown economic activities of the early modern period. In fact, the workings of the paper trade between the fifteenth and early nineteenth centuries remain one of the least studied areas of book history. This reserach network, founded by Sandra Zawrel and Daniel Bellingradt in September 2015, aims to reposition the paper trade in (book) history.

The murder of a popular and high-ranking Lutheran cleric in May 1726 in the residential city of the Electorate of Saxony, Dresden, by a Catholic foreigner triggered both urban turmoil and a process of intense media recycling. This article is concerned not so much with the murder case in detail but with the 'publishing of the murder case' by the lively local and regional print industries. It will be argued that these publishing processes were moments of economically driven media recycling that had effects on the censorship regime. Analyzing the contemporary perception of circulating prints by the Saxon authorities shows clearly a very low level of censorship activity. When connecting the bits of evidence, it seems evident that the inactivity must have been caused by more than just the usual level of administrational incompetence: the relevant Saxon authorities were Lutheran officials working for a Catholic King, and they chose inactivity deliberately.

Over the last years, the development of the periodical press in early modern Germany and Europe attracted a lot of scholarly attention. This report is dedicated to highlight and discuss the current state of research on the early modern periodical press in German speaking Europe. From the relevant literature on the topic published between 2000-2013 both the most ambitious and dedicated studies, and the most characteristic activities in the field have been selectively chosen and reported on.
Die Erforschung der periodischen Presse in der Frühen Neuzeit hat in den letzten Jahren, insbesondere bezogen auf den deutschen Sprachraum Europas, erheblich an Konturen gewonnen. Der vorliegende Forschungsbericht zeigt jüngere, charakteristische historiographische Tendenzen in der Erforschung und Kontextualisierung der im deutschen Sprachraum periodisch-seriell erschienenen Druckerzeugnisse seit circa dem frühen 17. The early modern period is characterized by a lively culture of written and printed participation that almost constantly stimulated new streams of commenting, correcting, answering and observing (paper-based) media in extenso. However, at the other end of the increased use of publications we see censoring activities like book burnings aimed to punish certain „unwanted“ voices. This article deals with the material problems of these public book burning ceremonies. Missing books, very small books, reduced numbers of books available, or books subjected to limiting-quotas, and, in general, too fast burning paper made these events to happenings of shortage. Through the use of additional ceremonial aspects, the organizers of book burnings tried to solve the shortages. In so doing, it was almost always the case that the less paper was available, the more effort was exerted in the rituals. As is demonstrated by eighteenth-century Frankfurt (Main), Cologne, Hamburg and Rome, the situations of shortage motivated the organizers to extend the ceremonial procedure by either ripping the publication to pieces before burning or often using gallows or pillories in order to make the ceremony happen at all.

Die europäische Epoche der Frühen Neuzeit ist maßgeblich gekennzeichnet durch eine Publikationsfreudigkeit: Beobachtungen, Meinungen, Widerlegungen, Korrekturen, Anmerkungen oder Antworten auf vorherig Publiziertes führten zu immer neuen Akten der Verschriftlichung und Drucklegung. Am anderen Ende der epochentypischen Publizität stand, wie schon in Antike und im Mittelalter, die zensural-motivierte Verbrennung ausgewählter Publikationen als "ungewollte" Stimmen. In diesem Aufsatz geht es um die typischen materiellen Probleme dieser als Strafe konzipierten und zeremoniell inszenierten Bücherverbrennungen, die sich im Modus des öffentlichen Spektakels vollzogen. Absentes, reduziertes, kontingentiertes oder zu flüchtig verbrennendes (bedrucktes) Papier machte diese symbolisch aufgeladenen Ereignisse nämlich zu Veranstaltungen im Zeichen des Mangels. Mittels zusätzlicher inszenatorischer bzw. zeremonieller Aspekte versuchten die Ausrichter das Problem kompensatorisch zu lösen: Tendenziell galt hierbei, je weniger Papier verfügbar war, desto mehr Aufwand musste betrieben werden. Fallbeispiele aus Frankfurt am Main, Köln, Hamburg und Rom zeigen die Logik des materiellen Mangels in Zeremonie-Verlängerungen (durch separates Zerreißen von Publikationen), Zeremonie-Ausweitungen (durch Galgen- oder Prangernutzung) sowie in angesammelten kollektiven Buchverbrennungen, um überhaupt eine Zeremonie gewährleisten zu können.

The article analyzes the media logic of urban acts of communication in early modern German cities. As is demonstrated by Cologne and Hamburg in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the growing use of print (particularly pamphlets) moved local conflict away from face-to-face confrontation into progressively more multifaceted modes of communication, increasingly expressed in both manuscript and print. In highlighting the mediality of early modern urban culture, the changing relationship between the urban community, public opinion, and forms of communication is addressed. The resulting effect from the interplay and complementation of oral, written, and printed means of communication is described as echoes that formed an urban resonating box—a constant polyphonic state including both the literate and illiterate.

The article analyses one of the most spectacular urban rebellions of the early modern Holy Roman Empire of the German nation from the perspective of local acts of communication. Led by the merchant Nikolaus Gülich, the ‘Gülich rebellion’ convulsed the free and imperial city of Cologne in the 1680s. Gülich appealed to public opinion and used media impulses within the urban community to campaign successfully against the corruption of the city council.

Als am 30. April 1708 »über 1000. Studenten und ander Pöbel=Volck« die Residenz Brandenburg-Preußens in Köln attackierten, stellte dies den vorläufigen Höhepunkt eines seit Monaten schwelenden Streits dar. Diese Studie blickt auf den publizistik- und kommunikationshistorischen Vorlauf jenes »Residentenstreits« und analysiert, welche Signale, Diskurse und Dynamiken im öffentlichen urbanen Raum Kölns herrschten, wirkten und generiert werden konnten. Aus der Beobachtung einiger Stadtbewohner, dass ein – innerhalb der »katholischen« Stadtmauern verbotener – evangelischer Gottesdienst im Residentenhaus stattgefunden habe, entwickelte sich eine sensibilisierte Kommunikationssituation auf mehreren Ebenen. Innerhalb Kölns mobilisierten Studenten und Geistliche die Öffentlichkeit, indem sie etwa »lateinische Zeddel« publizierten, um weitere protestantische Gottesdienste zu verhindern. Der Magistrat Kölns sah sich auf diplomatischer Ebene mit dem aufstrebenden Reichsstand und der sich entwickelnden Führungsmacht des Corpus Evangelicorum, Brandenburg-Preußen, konfrontiert, während zugleich die »eigene« Stadt-Öffentlichkeit beziehungsweise Deutungssphäre gegen die »Zeddel« und Gerüchte behauptet werden musste. Exemplarisch zeigt diese Rekonstruktion des innerstädtischen Meinungsklimas, welches durch Gerüchte, Flugdrucke und Predigten angeheizt wurde, wie und in welchen Parametern urbane frühneuzeitliche Öffentlichkeit funktionierte.

Making up the balance after 50 years can be fulfilling and precarious at the same time. In 2007 the Institut für Deutsche Presseforschung in Bremen invited to look at both the current status and the desiderata of the history of the press. Although the opulence of research on the history of the press is impressive, new perspectives have been opened up. For example, for the first time nearly »forgotten« prints such as pamphlets and almanachs were integrated into the interdisciplinary field of press research on the early modern times. All contributions of the conference publication are unified by the explicit and implicit hint that future research on the history of the press shouldn't be done for the sake of adding another aspect about periodicals, but to integrate the knowledge of press into the complexes of the historiography of media, communication and public spheres.
